Hydrate to Stay Safe in Extreme Heat

Published:

With temperatures dangerously high in much of California, staying hydrated is crucial to your health, particularly if you spend time outdoors.

Extreme heat is the number one cause of weather-related deaths in California. Drinking plenty of fluids helps prevent potentially deadly heat-related illnesses.

Water is the obvious hydration choice. It provides a host of health benefits, including body temperature regulation. People need more water when it’s hot.

But water isn’t the only option when it comes to getting and staying hydrated. Other beverages and foods can supplement your water intake. They include:

  • Low-sugar sports/electrolyte drinks (if you’re physically exerting yourself in high temperatures)
  • 100% fruit or vegetable juice
  • Plain coffee or tea (in moderation)
  • Coconut water (without added sugar)
  • Milk
  • Cucumbers
  • Watermelon
  • Grapes
  • Leafy greens
  • Strawberries

The CDC recommends drinking water before you feel thirsty. When you feel thirsty, you are not hydrated enough.

For people who work outdoors in extreme heat, the CDC also recommends being hydrated before work begins and drinking eight ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes during outdoor work.
